Workshop:    Topic:A Brief History of Photography: Where Do You Fit?
Optics have been used in art for centuries but the images we know as photographs have only been in existence since 1839. Come learn about the fascinating origins of the projected and fixed image and find out who your artistic ancestors were. Do you love the human form? So did Edward Weston in the 1930’s. Do you giggle over good photo manipulation? Jerry Uelsman’s been doing it since the 1960’s — and he still is! — without Photoshop. Is the quiet still life your thing? Josef Sudek made most of his pictures in his small studio with only one arm after losing the other in WWI. Are you a mom struggling to find balance between work and family? So was Imogen Cunningham in the 1920’s, and making amazing botanical photographs. Bring your own pictures for discussion and exploration of your artistic lineage. Various photo books will also be available to look through.

Instructor – Rita Lombardi is an Associate Professor of Photography at Pratt Munson-Williams-Proctor in Utica. She teaches and practices a variety of photographic processes, from the I-phone to the 8×10 view camera. Lombardi also has a passion for the history of photography and is endlessly fascinated by the many connections and inspirations she finds there.

Workshop: Abstract Photography
Abstract photography is a broad, subjective topic, that anyone can explore within their individual aesthetic & capabilities, of a wide interpretation not limited to blurry, out-of-focus images, or a traditional, representational idea of what is an abstract photograph. An abstract photo can be something representational that does not immediately present as such.
